Staying Connected During Treatment
Isolation – it’s one of the first challenges a child may face after receiving a cancer diagnosis. Not being able to attend school, see friends or take part in other normal activities can be very isolating. Long hospital stays or hours spent receiving treatment can take their toll adding to the feelings of isolation. But staying connected during treatment is critical.
Reconnecting
The American Cancer Society offers some basic ideas to help children with cancer of all ages. They suggest encouraging children with cancer to stay connected with friends and family during treatment, while they are in the hospital, or if they need to stay at home as a precaution.
Reconnecting kids with cancer to their peers is extremely important because social isolation only makes their fight against cancer more challenging. Connecting them to their friends, family and classmates can go a long way in helping them to fight isolation.
By using electronics like the laptops and tablets Mikey’s Way distributes, kids with cancer are able to regain some normalcy. By staying connected during treatment, they have a lifeline to their world outside of the hospital walls.
