Welcome to the Mikey’s Way Foundation

It is the goal of the Mikey’s Way Foundation to be able to connect every hospitalized child with their friends, family and school, enabling them to cope with the separation during long-term treatment for cancer and other life threatening illnesses.

We ensure this connection through the use of the Internet, (Skype/Facetime) and our ability to supply every child with a laptop computer, tablet, or similar electronic device. In creating this connection we are in turn presenting the child with a strong, and positive form of diversion. This diversion helps create the Mind-Body Connection and a way for each child to  escape…Mikey’s Way.

Mikey’s Way benefits from another great Drive for Dreams Gala & Golf Tournament

We would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to all those who helped make our sixth annual Drive for Dreams gala and golf fundraiser a huge success. Our gala on August 9 brought together many of our supporters and generous donors, who enjoyed a great evening filled with extraordinary auction items and hilarious comedy by Chris Monty. Our golfers hit the links and made their way through our exciting on-course events on August 10 at Brookfield Country Club. We are proud to announce a total of $219,000 raised, which will go directly to serving pediatric cancer patients through Mikey’s Way Days. Thank you again to all, and we look forward to seeing you next year!

My name is Julia Belmonte and just this year, a student in my classroom, Marcello Fiorenza, was a recipient of a laptop from your foundation during his stay at Yale Children’s Hospital. Due to his ability to have this laptop, we are able to now Skype with him from our classroom while he is receiving chemo treatments and cannot attend school. I wish you could have seen the excitement in my classroom the day we were able to reconnect with Marcello while he was at the hospital through the camera on his laptop. It was truly a touching moment and one that I will always remember.

As a school, we were inspired by the story and organized a fundraiser for your foundation. Our totals are in and we raised $4,500.00 through a holiday run where children collected sponsors to support them in this event.

Please let us know how we can donate the proceeds to you! We appreciate all you do!

Please feel free to call if you would like to speak in person! I can be reached at XXX-XXX-XXXX

Thank you!

What they are saying

This particular child had lost the ability to communicate due to a brain tumor and subsequent operation. A request was made to Mikey’s Way for help, in the form of an electronic tablet, to assist in his recovery. We honored the request and received this e-mail:

Dear Les,

The speech pathologist installed some communication apps and his mom installed a piano app to help with his dexterity. He used to be an excellent piano player and is slowly gaining some movement back. I cannot tell you how much it means to them to have the tablet. Junior is elated.

Thanks again,

“Mikey’s Way Foundation is amazing and beyond words. It was so great to see the kids smile, some of them have not done that in a long time.”

“Thank you for your amazing visit. Our kids, as well as our staff, were so overwhelmed by the enormity of your generosity. The children are going online, connecting with friends and just having a wonderful time. The distraction has certainly helped the children cope better.”

“Mikey’s Way has made such an amazing difference in the lives of our pediatric patients. The children are excited and connecting with their friends at home. There is an energy/excitement on the floor that was not there yesterday. There is no way we can express the gratitude we have for the amazing work your foundation does. Keep up the great work – you really do make a difference!!”

Dear Mikey’s Way,

In your one day visit, you had the ability to bring smiles to those in pain, laughter to those in sadness, and comfort to those struggling through a very difficult time in their young lives. Mikey’s vision was one of selflessness and love. You have all fulfilled that beautifully.

With deepest thanks,
Katie & the CHAM Child life team

Another Successful Drive for Dreams Gala & Golf Tournament to Benefit Mikey’s Way

We would like to thank all of our supporters and generous donors for helping us make our fifth annual Drive for Dreams benefit a great success. Our gala on August 3 was enjoyed by all, highlighted by our exciting silent and live auctions and culminating in a sea of laughter thanks to our comedian, Chris Monty. A great day of golf was had by all those who participated in our tournament the following day. We thank you for your continued support throughout the year and look forward to seeing you at next year’s event!

What happens after Mikey’s Way leaves?

My name is Mariah Turk and I am the recipient of the very first Mikey’s Way Day gift at Roswell Park Cancer Institute in Buffalo, NY. Mikey’s Way Foundation coming to Roswell was a shock to all the kids on the floor, not just myself. The generosity and kindness coming from one foundation was amazing to witness, and be a part of. As they handed me a brand new laptop, I was astonished that this gift was for me; I immediately started crying and thanking them over and over again.

I was diagnosed with Osteosarcoma right as my senior year of high school was ending.  I was forced to put off college for a semester and start in the Spring. The laptop I received from Mikey’s Way enabled me to connect with my friends and family. I was away from them for long periods of time. Through Skype, I was able to talk with them and keep in touch. After Mikey’s Way left, I was on the computer 24/7. I was learning more about what this gift could do for me and my boredom of being in treatment. Connecting to my friends and family was the most important thing, just being able to talk to them was the thing I needed most.  Every morning I would wake up and genuinely get excited when I would see my computer, still in the place I left it. With each passing hour I was on the computer my mind was diverted off treatment and focused on whatever I was doing on my laptop. I would forget, for just a little while, that I was in a hospital, receiving treatments for a life threatening illness. As I was on my computer my mood would constantly be good, my bed was always upright and the lights were turned on; reflecting the state I was in. It truly helped me cope.

Now, two years later, I still use that laptop for everything. Being in school requires you to have access to the internet and word documents. Without this gift I would have been lost in treatment, I wouldn’t have been able to connect with my family and friends and the boredom would have taken over. From personal experience, the effect of a Mikey’s Way gift is one that is long-lasting. It has been two years since I received my Mikey’s way gift and it is a part of my life just as much today as it was the day it was given to me.
