Welcome To The Mikey’s Way Foundation

Featured

It is the goal of the Mikey’s Way Foundation to be able to connect every hospitalized child with their friends, family, and school, enabling them to cope with the separation during long-term treatment for cancer and other life threatening illnesses.

We ensure this connection through the use of the Internet (Skype), and our ability to supply every child with a laptop computer, netbook or similar electronic device. In creating this connection we are in turn presenting the child with a form of diversion. This diversion helps create the Mind-Body Connection, and a way for them to escape…Mikey’s Way

What they are saying

This particular child had lost the ability to communicate due to a brain tumor and subsequent operation.  A request was made to Mikey’s Way for help, in the form of an electronic tablet, to the assist in his recovery.  We honored the request and received this e-mail:

Dear Les,

The speech pathologist installed some communication apps and his mom installed a piano app to help with his dexterity. He used to be an excellent piano player and is slowly gaining some movement back. I cannot tell you how much it means to them to have the tablet. Junior is elated.

Thanks again,

“Thank you for your amazing visit. Our kids, as well as our staff, were so overwhelmed by the enormity of your generosity. The children are going online, connecting with friends, and just having a wonderful time. The distraction has certainly helped the children cope better.”

“Mikey’s Way has made such an amazing difference in the lives of our pediatric patients. The children are excited and connecting with their friends at home.  There is an energy/excitement  on the floor that was not there yesterday.  There is no way we can express the gratitude we have for the amazing work your foundation does.  Keep up the great work – you really do make a difference!!”

From our visit to Cohen’s Children Hospital / L.I.J

We met briefly yesterday, when you came to Cohen’s with Mikey’s Way Cart. I know that you will be receiving an official thank you letter from our hospital, but I just needed to take a second out to acknowledge your generosity- it was overwhelming to say the least. As a Child Life Specialist of 9 years, I’ve seen many donations come through these doors, and they all put smiles on our patients faces. But Mikey’s Way is special in that Mikey’s wish, and through his legacy -your organization -provides the outlet that many of our children seek in today’s modern world.  As the outpatient Hem/Onc specialist, our biggest request for day use is our netbook laptop, as it truly does provide an “escape” and adds a sense of normalcy to young patients/adolescents faced with hours of hospitalization.  THANK YOU to you and your entire organization for your incredible generosity.
May Mikey’s legacy continue to bring smiles to children in hospitals through Mikey’s Way.
We look forward to continuing our partnership with you.
Thanks again,
Faye

What happens after Mikey’s Way leaves?

My name is Mariah Turk and I am the recipient of the very first Mikey’s Way Day gift at Roswell Park Cancer Institute in Buffalo, NY.  Mikey’s Way Foundation coming to Roswell was a shock to all the kids on the floor, not just myself. The generosity and kindness coming from one foundation was amazing to witness, and be a part of.   As they handed me a brand new laptop, I was astonished that this gift was for me; I immediately started crying and thanking them over and over again.

I was diagnosed with Osteosarcoma right as my senior year of high school was ending.  I was forced to put off college for a semester and start in the Spring. The laptop I received from Mikey’s Way enabled me to connect with my friends and family.  I was away from them for long periods of time. Through skype, I was able to talk with them and keep in touch. After Mikey’s Way left I was on the computer 24/7.  I was learning more about what this gift could do for me and my boredom of being in treatment. Connecting to my friends and family was the most important thing, just being able to talk to them was the thing I needed most.  Every morning I would wake up and genuinely get excited when I would see my computer, still in the place I left it. With each passing hour I was on the computer my mind was diverted off treatment and focused on whatever I was doing on my laptop. I would forget, for just a little while, that I was in a hospital, receiving treatments for a life threatening illness. As I was on my computer my mood would constantly be good, my bed was always upright and the lights were turned on; reflecting the state I was in. It truly helped me cope.

Now two years later, I still used that laptop for everything. Being in school requires you to have access to the internet and word documents. Without this gift I would have been lost in treatment, I wouldn’t have been able to connect with my family and friends and the boredom would have taken over. From personal experience, the effect of a Mikey’s Way gift is one that is long lasting,  It has been two years since I received my Mikey’s way gift and it is a part of my life just as much today, as it was the day it was given to me.
